The long-awaited General Election is less than a week away, and next Tuesday, November 8, Pennsylvanians will head to the polls to elect all 203 state House members and 25 state Senators. While some current members face challengers, the members below decided to either retire or run for another office, leaving their seat up for grabs. Additionally, all three row offices are up for election, and we’ve got a ballot question on judicial retirement age.

House Members Retiring or Running for Another Elected Office

The members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives listed below are either retiring or running for another elected office. Either way, we expect new faces in the following seats come January, in addition to any potential incumbent upsets.

  • HD-31: Rep. Steve Santarsiero (D-Bucks) – Running for Congress (PA-8)
  • HD-45: Rep. Nick Kotik (D-Allegheny) – Democratic Chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee
  • HD-49: Rep. Peter Daley (D-Washington) – Democratic Chairman of the House Consumer Affairs Committee
  • HD-58: Rep. Ted Harhai (D-Westmoreland) – Democratic Chairman of the House Game and Fisheries Committee
  • HD-92: Rep. Mike Regan (R-York) – Running for State Senate (SD-3)
  • HD-95: Rep. Kevin Schreiber (D-York) – Retiring
  • HD-101: Rep. Mauree Gingrich (R-Lebanon) – Republican Chairman of the House Labor and Industry Committee
  • HD-106: Rep. John Payne (R-Dauphin) – Republican Chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee
  • HD-111: Rep. Sandra Major (R-Susquehanna) – House Republican Caucus Chair
  • HD-112: Rep. Frank Farina (D-Lackawanna) – Retiring
  • HD-150: Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Montgomery) – Retiring
  • HD-158: Rep. Chris Ross (R-Chester) – Republican Chairman of the House Commerce Committee
  • HD-159: Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland (D-Chester) – Became Mayor of the City of Chester
  • HD-165: Rep. Bill Adolph (R-Delaware) – Republican Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee
  • HD-183: Rep. Julie Harhart (R-Northampton) – Republican Chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee
  • HD-192: Rep. Lynnwood Savage (D-Philadelphia) – Retiring

  • HD-202: Rep. Mark Cohen (D-Philadelphia) – Democratic Chairman of the House State Government Committee

Senate Members Running for Another Elected Office

Every two years, half of the Pennsylvania Senate comes up for reelection. Similar to the House list above, we’ll bid adieu to the following Senators and expect new representation in the following areas post-election.

  • SD-3: Sen. Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland) – Republican Chairman of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee
  • SD-13: Sen. Lloyd Smucker (R-Lancaster) – Republican Chairman of the Senate Education Committee; Running for Congress (PA-16)
  • SD-31: Sen. Shirley Kitchen (R-Philadelphia) – Democratic Chairman of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee
  • SD-35: Sen. John Wozniak (D-Cambria) – Democratic Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee

Row Offices

Pennsylvania also has three elected row officers. Only one incumbent is running for reelection—Auditor General Eugene DePasquale. A brand new Attorney General and a new state Treasurer will be elected to a four-year term next week.

Ballot Question (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution of Pennsylvania)

Proposed constitutional amendments must be put to the electorate before they become part of the law of the land. On Tuesday, Pennsylvanians will be asked to answer the following question:

Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to require that justices of the Supreme Court, judges and magisterial district judges be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 75 years?
